Android Mobile Filtering

Just got my new Samsung Galaxy S mobile which works great! So much faster than the old Windows Mobile and has almost everything I need for now (Evernote doesn't quite replace MS Onenote for me)

Wanted an internet filter on there and couldn't find one. So here was my solution:
  • Rooted the phone - Link
  • Installed SetDNS to set the Domain Name Servers - Link
Domain Name Servers (DNS) essentially provide a web browser with the address for the computer to retrieve the contents of the website (like a street directory without which it cannot find the site).
  • Installed ZDbox to lock the changing of SetDNS - Link (which is a great app for its other features as well)
  • Used the OpenDNS Family Shield DNS Servers (Primary:208.67.222.123|Secondary:208.67.220.123) - Link
  • Tested it working - Link and it works perfectly over 3G and wifi
All these steps require a bit of computer knowledge and the ability to follow some instructions, but it really wasn't that hard! The OpenDNS Family Shield cleans up the web nicely. If you were looking for more parental controls; applications like ZDBox can block the Android Market and any other application such as Youtube, Application Uninstallers (ZDbox) and so forth.

Hope this helps!

p.s. my Galaxy S is running Froyo
p.s. no guarantees this will work with your Mobile provider as some providers do things differently. I'm with TPG/Optus

I found a new role in my ministry today - installing porn filter software on people's PC's. They need someone else to so they don't know the password to turn off filtering for a quickie.

I used FamilyShield DNS servers and K9 filter.

Nice work! Make sure they deal with the heart issues as well. It's all good to get rid of the porn so that they can feel good about themselves in some religious sense, but the sinful roots are the real issue

This is a great post! I wrote SetDNS a few weeks ago and I completely forgot about the OpenDNS Family Shield. I've added it into the drop-down so it'll be there on the next update (not that you weren't able to enter the IP's yourself).

I like the use of ZDbox to lock the settings. I'm going to take a look at that now.

Kind regards, Steve.

If you get two copies of this, it's because blogger came up with an error last time I clicked submit!

While the approach seemed sound the FamilyShield DNS servers (OpenDNS) really let a substantial amount of inappropriate material through. I have used K9 successfully at home on a PC but am still looking for an Android solution

That's why I've also use the stock browser only & x3watch. This means that I'm always kept accountable.
If someone goes looking they can always find inappropriate material.. it's just a safety net, not the problem solver
